New data shows antenna TV use is on the rise, particularly among people already watching Internet TV. ATSC 3.0 promises to bring broadcast TV into the Internet family. When will it arrive?

Tim Hanlon, CEO of the Vertere Group, joins us this week as we look at the present and future of TV broadcasting in America.

Chapter 1: Britbox arrives in the UK (1:30)

Britbox, a collaboration between the BBC and ITV in the UK, has been very successful netting over a half-million US subscribers. Now the service is to launch in the UK, but isn’t all the content already available through BBC iPlayer and ITV+?

Chapter 2: Stunning growth in antenna TV use (5:40)

Mr. Hanlon explains why he thinks antenna TV is enjoying such a strong resurgence. We also discuss the Nielsen data that describes the phenomenon.

Chapter 3: Unbundling and rebundling (9:30)

How antenna TV is becoming an essential part of people’s TV bundles.

Chapter 4: Locast and Aereo TV (12:30)

Locast is a non-profit helping people tap into their local broadcast channels. We discuss the differences and similarities with now-defunct Aereo TV. Mr. Hanlon talks about two other services helping people leverage antenna TV.

Chapter 5: Why broadcasters should help bring personal bundles together (15:00)

The big challenge for consumers is bringing together all the different video services they use into a simple interface. We discuss several solutions and why broadcasters aren’t stepping up to help.

Chapter 6: Why broadcasters aren’t waiting for ATSC 3.0 (18:30)

Sinclair launched STIRR online when it promised to do something similar leveraging ATSC 3.0. Why did Sinclair decide not to wait for the new broadcast standard to arrive? Mr. Hanlon wonders why broadcasters haven’t been more aggressive in creating a unified experience themselves.

Chapter 7: On the timetable for ATSC 3.0 rollout (24:30)

The FCC mandated ATSC 1.0 during analog switch-off. There is no such compelling reason to switch to ATSC 3.0. What does that mean to the roll-out?

Chapter 8: Why Amazon is providing an antenna TV DVR (28:30)

We discuss why Amazon delivered the Recast antenna TV DVR and some other OTA DVR solutions.

Chapter 9: Why local broadcasters are behind with local ads (34:20)

Mr. Hanlon discusses why local broadcasters can’t deliver addressable advertising and how this is hurting them with local ads.
