The occasional reports of jailbreak incidents across Nigeria have raised concerns regarding the efficacy of the nation's correctional system.
Voicing that concern recently was the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who passed a damning verdict, stating that there had been more jailbreaks across the country since what he called a deceitful change from Nigeria Prisons Service to Nigeria Correctional Service. His outburst followed the recent jailbreak in Suleja, Niger State, where a downpour wreaked havoc on the Medium Security Custodial Centre, facilitating the escape of 118 inmates.
The renaming of Nigeria's prisons to correctional centres in 2019 was accompanied by promises of reform, rehabilitation, and enhanced security. However, since this transition, the frequency and audacity of jailbreaks have only intensified.
