Angela Merkel, the woman who's steered Germany for the past 16 years, is standing down.
Exit polls have her Christian Democratic Union party and the Social Democratic Party neck and neck.
New Zealand Initiative Executive Director and German economist Oliver Hartwich told Mike Hosking the parties don't have much in common, so negotiations will take a while.
“It would be in New Zealand terms a coalition of National, Labour and ACT or of the Labour Party, ACT and the Greens, and that’s the choice that Germany now have.”
