November 26: Where is your God?

Psalms 79:1-13:
O God, the nations have come into Your inheritance; Your holy temple they have defiled; they have laid Jerusalem in heaps. The dead bodies of Your servants they have given as food for the birds of the heavens, the flesh of Your saints to the beasts of the earth. Their blood they have shed like water all around Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them. We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to those who are around us.
How long, Lord? Will You be angry forever? Will Your jealousy burn like fire? Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not know You, and on the kingdoms that do not call on Your name. For they have devoured Jacob, and laid waste his dwelling place. Oh, do not remember former iniquities against us! Let Your tender mercies come speedily to meet us, for we have been brought very low. Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name; and deliver us, and provide atonement for our sins, for Your name’s sake! Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Let there be known among the nations in our sight the avenging of the blood of Your servants which has been shed. Let the groaning of the prisoner come before You; according to the greatness of Your power preserve those who are appointed to die; and return to our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom their reproach with which they have reproached You, O Lord. So we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture, will give You thanks forever; we will show forth Your praise to all generations.

The psalms that we have been studying, especially this group of psalms that belong to Asaph or his descendants, have a particular theme and it is the pain of the destruction of Jerusalem.
This psalm describes a scene of terror at the invasion of the enemy army, an army that had no respect or compassion for the people of the living God. And it is that God gave them into the hands of the enemy because they had abandoned the Lord for many years.
In the November 22 devotional we studied Psalm 74 and titled this devotional "How long?" In this Psalm 79 Asaph asks again the same question “how long?”, and in this case he refers to the wrath of God and the anger of the Lord with his people.
The psalmist could not bear to see the suffering of young and old, children, women, and the elderly. And not only was it the people's own suffering, it was also the mockery and contempt of the enemies, showing them in their faces that their God was not strong enough to protect them. It really was a very big humiliation when they said to them: "Where is your God? Where is the glory of the God of Moses, Joshua and the great kings? The God of this temple bathed in gold?

The people of Israel accepted their guilt too late. They themselves had caused this calamity and had to listen to the mocking voices of their oppressors. This was very painful because they knew what God could do. They were delivered many times from the hand of the Assyrians, Midianites, Philistines and different armies that sought to invade the Jewish territory.
In this case, the psalmist asked the Lord not to continue punishing them for their sins and to fill them in abundance with his mercies, his compassion and forgiveness. The psalmist wanted the prisoner to be free and that the condemned to death be forgiven; he wished to see the glory of Israel restored again and hear the praises of God from a forgiven and redeemed people.

I hope this lesson teaches us not to forget the Lord our God and not to play with our salvation. That today we can learn from them not to make the same mistake, following our own wishes, ignoring the advice of God's messengers; rather let us passionately follow the Word of God, let us tell the praises, miracles and wonders of God. Let's not wait for the tragedy to come and we suffer because of our bad actions to be able to adore and praise God to tell His wonders to our children.
Let's not wait any longer! Let's do it today! Let us honor the Lord!

Noviembre 26: ¿Dónde está tu Dios?

Salmos 79:1‭-‬13 RVA2015:
"Oh Dios, los gentiles han venido a tu heredad. Han contaminado tu santo templo, y a Jerusalén han reducido a montones de escombros. Han dado los cuerpos de tus siervos como comida a las aves de los cielos; han dado la carne de tus fieles a los animales de la tierra. Derramaron como agua su sangre en los alrededores de Jerusalén; no hubo quien los enterrase. Somos una afrenta para nuestros vecinos, burla y ridículo ante los que están a nuestro alrededor.
¿Hasta cuándo, oh SEÑOR? ¿Has de estar airado para siempre? ¿Arderá como fuego tu celo? Derrama tu ira sobre las naciones que no te conocen y sobre los reinos que no invocan tu nombre. Porque han devorado a Jacob, y han desolado su morada. No recuerdes contra nosotros los pecados de nuestros antepasados. Salgan pronto a encontrarnos tus misericordias porque estamos muy abatidos. Ayúdanos, oh Dios, salvación nuestra, por causa de la gloria de tu nombre. Líbranos y expía nuestros pecados por amor de tu nombre. ¿Por qué han de decir los gentiles: “¿Dónde está su Dios?”. Sea dada a conocer a las naciones y ante nuestros ojos la venganza de la sangre de tus siervos que ha sido derramada. Llegue a tu presencia el gemido de los presos. Conforme a la grandeza de tu brazo preserva a los sentenciados a muerte. Devuelve a nuestros vecinos siete veces en su cara la infamia con que te han deshonrado, oh SEÑOR. Entonces nosotros, pueblo tuyo y ovejas de tu prado, te confesaremos para siempre; por generación y generación contaremos de tus alabanzas."


Los salmos que hemos estado estudiando, especialmente este grupo de salmos que pertenecen a Asaf o sus descendientes, tienen en particular un tema y es el dolor de la destrucción de Jerusalén.
Este salmo describe una escena de terror por la invasión del ejército enemigo, un ejército que no tenía respeto ni compasión por el pueblo del Dios viviente. Y es que Dios los entregó en las manos del enemigo porque ellos habían abandonado por muchos años al Señor.
En el devocional del 22 de noviembre estudiamos el salmo 74 y titulamos este devocional "¿Hasta cuándo?" En este salmo 79 Asaf hace de nuevo la misma pregunta “¿hasta cuándo?”, y en este caso él se refiere a la ira de Dios y al enojo del señor con su pueblo.
El salmista no soportaba ver el sufrimiento de grandes y pequeños, de niños, mujeres, y ancianos. Y no solamente era el sufrimiento propio del pueblo, también fue la burla y el menosprecio de los enemigos, sacándoles en cara que el Dios de ellos no era lo suficientemente fuerte para protegerlos. Realmente era una humillación muy grande cuando ellos les decían: "¿Dónde está tu Dios? ¿Dónde está la gloria del Dios de Moisés, de Josué y de los grandes reyes? ¿Del Dios de este templo bañado en oro?

No te pierdas el devocional de mañana donde vamos a entender el por qué de las consecuencias del pueblo de Israel y el por qué Dios no los protegió de sus enemigos.
El pueblo de Israel aceptó demasiado tarde su culpa. Ellos mismos habían ocasionado esta calamidad y tuvieron que escuchar las voces burlonas de sus opresores. Esto era muy doloroso porque ellos sabían lo que Dios podía hacer. Ellos fueron librados muchísimas veces de la mano de los asirios, madianitas, filisteos y diferentes ejércitos que buscaban invadir el territorio judío.
En este caso, el salmista le pidió al Señor que no los siga castigando por sus pecados y que los colmara en abundancia con sus misericordias, su compasión y perdón. El salmista deseó que el preso fuera libre y que al condenado a muerte se le perdone; él deseaba ver la gloria de Israel restaurada nuevamente y escuchar las alabanzas de Dios de un pueblo perdonado y redimido.

Espero que esta lección nos enseñe a no olvidar al Señor nuestro Dios y no jugar con nuestra salvación. Que el día de hoy podamos aprender de ellos a no cometer el mismo error, siguiendo nuestros propios deseos, ignorando los consejos de los mensajeros de Dios; más bien sigamos con pasión la Palabra de Dios, contemos las alabanzas, los milagros y prodigios de Dios. No esperemos que venga la tragedia y suframos por culpa de nuestras malas acciones para poder adorar y alabar a Dios para contar sus maravillas a nuestros hijos.
¡No esperemos más! ¡Hagámoslo hoy! ¡Honremos al Señor!
