November 22: How long?
Psalms 74:1-19:
O God, why have You cast us off forever? Why does Your anger smoke against the sheep of Your pasture? Remember Your congregation, which You have purchased of old, the tribe of Your inheritance, which You have redeemed— this Mount Zion where You have dwelt. Lift up Your feet to the perpetual desolations. The enemy has damaged everything in the sanctuary. Your enemies roar in the midst of Your meeting place; they set up their banners for signs. They seem like men who lift up axes among the thick trees. And now they break down its carved work, all at once, with axes and hammers. They have set fire to Your sanctuary; they have defiled the dwelling place of Your name to the ground. They said in their hearts, “Let us destroy them altogether.” They have burned up all the meeting places of God in the land. We do not see our signs; there is no longer any prophet; nor is there any among us who knows how long. O God, how long will the adversary reproach? Will the enemy blaspheme Your name forever? Why do You withdraw Your hand, even Your right hand? Take it out of Your bosom and destroy them. For God is my King from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. You divided the sea by Your strength; You broke the heads of the sea serpents in the waters. You broke the heads of Leviathan in pieces, and gave him as food to the people inhabiting the wilderness. You broke open the fountain and the flood; You dried up mighty rivers. The day is Yours, the night also is Yours; You have prepared the light and the sun. You have set all the borders of the earth; You have made summer and winter. Remember this, that the enemy has reproached, O Lord, and that a foolish people has blasphemed Your name. Oh, do not deliver the life of Your turtledove to the wild beast! Do not forget the life of Your poor forever.


These verses are a very intimate prayer at a very difficult time for the people of Israel. This psalm seems to describe the time when Israel was invaded by their enemies that burned and destroyed the temple of the Lord, looted the people, and took many captive. Possibly it was the Assyrians or the Babylonians. What we do know is that the psalmist, in his prayer, tried to call God's attention to have mercy on them, remembering how God chose them from ancient times, calling them His chosen ones, His people.
The psalmist claims the Lord by supplicating Him with this phrase: "How long". I think this is a phrase that many of us do before God: How long? How long will I be in this situation? My child that I don't see in Your presence? How long is my husband's behavior? The relationship with my wife? And the endless questions of "how long".

But in that cry of despair, the psalmist also made a declaration of faith and trust in the Lord, affirming that God is still his King, his Savior. He still recognized Him as the Almighty and Sovereign. He recognized Him as the Creator of all this majestic world, of everything that exists on earth and sea, and who dominates ferocious animals and beasts. All of this to indicate that the psalmist still fully trusted God and knew that God was in control of all these circumstances. God allows us to go through different stages of life, different seasons, as well as rain and drought, such as winter and summer. Days of light and darkness. He is behind all this.

Israel was suffering the consequences of their actions. God warned them many times that they don't stop following His statutes but they abandoned and neglected the Word of God. On some occasions they were tested to see if they trusted the Lord even though they were behaving well. Many times God brought to light many injustices that were covered up through trials; in others, He corrected His children because He loved them and made their ways straight. Many times God allowed the enemy to surround them so that they would not forget that it was not with their own strength but with the Spirit of God.

I hope that today we can hold on to the hand of God. We continue crying out to the Lord so that soon He helps us and hears our prayer, but despite this, remain faithful followers of His love and kindness, that our hope is firmly placed in Him; we have no choice but to follow His answer. Although we still don't see the solution, He will always be our God, our King and Savior.

Noviembre 22: ¿Hasta cuándo?
Salmos 74:1‭-‬19 RVA2015:
¿Por qué, oh Dios, nos has desechado para siempre? ¿Por qué humea tu furor contra las ovejas de tu prado? Acuérdate de tu congregación que adquiriste en tiempos antiguos y redimiste para que sea la tribu de tu heredad: este monte Sión en el cual has habitado. Dirige tus pasos hacia las ruinas perpetuas; todo lo ha destruido el enemigo en el santuario. Tus adversarios han rugido en medio de tu santuario y han puesto sus estandartes por señal. Fueron semejantes a los que levantan el hacha contra el tupido bosque. Ahora, con hachas y barras han destruido todas tus entalladuras. Han prendido fuego a tu santuario; han profanado el tabernáculo de tu nombre, echándolo a tierra. Dijeron en su corazón: “¡Destruyámoslos de una vez!”. Han quemado todos los lugares de culto a Dios en el país. Ya no distinguimos nuestras señales; ya no hay profeta, ni con nosotros hay quien sepa hasta cuándo. ¿Hasta cuándo, oh Dios, nos ha de afrentar el adversario? ¿Ha de ultrajar el enemigo tu nombre perpetuamente? ¿Por qué retraes tu mano y retienes tu diestra en tu seno? Sin embargo, Dios es mi Rey desde los tiempos antiguos. Él es quien obra salvación en medio de la tierra. Tú con tu poder dividiste el mar; rompiste sobre las aguas la cabeza de los monstruos acuáticos. Tú machacaste las cabezas del Leviatán, y lo diste por comida a los moradores del desierto. Tú abriste el manantial y el arroyo; tú secaste los ríos inagotables. Tuyo es el día, tuya es también la noche; tú estableciste la luna y el sol. Tú fijaste todas las fronteras de la tierra. El verano y el invierno, tú los formaste. Acuérdate de que el enemigo ha injuriado al SEÑOR; un pueblo vil ha blasfemado tu nombre. No entregues a las fieras la vida de tu tórtola; no olvides para siempre la congregación de tus pobres.


Estos versos son una oración muy íntima en un momento muy difícil para el pueblo de Israel. Al parecer este salmo describe el momento cuando Israel fue invadido por sus enemigos que quemaron y destruyeron el templo del Señor, saquearon al pueblo y llevaron cautivos a muchos. Posiblemente fueron los asirios o los babilonios. Lo que sí sabemos es que el salmista, en su oración, trató de llamar la atención de Dios para que tenga misericordia de ellos, recordando cómo Dios los escogió desde la antigüedad, llamándolos Sus elegidos, Su pueblo.
El salmista reclama al Señor suplicándole con esta frase: "Hasta cuándo". Creo que esta es una frase que muchos hacemos delante de Dios: ¿Hasta cuándo? ¿Hasta cuándo estaré en esta situación? ¿Mi hijo que no veo en tu presencia? ¿Hasta cuándo el comportamiento de mi esposo? ¿La relación con mi esposa? Y los sin fin de interrogaciones de "hasta cuándo".

Pero en ese clamor de desesperación, el salmista también hizo una declaración de fe y confianza en el Señor, afirmando que Dios es todavía su Rey, su Salvador. Todavía lo reconocía como el Todopoderoso y Soberano. Lo reconocía como el Creador de todo este mundo majestuoso, de todo lo que existe en la tierra y el mar, y que domina los animales y bestias feroces. Todo esto para indicar que el salmista todavía confiaba plenamente en Dios y sabía que Dios tenía el control de todas estas circunstancias. Dios permite que pasemos por diferentes etapas de la vida, diferentes temporadas, así como la lluvia y la sequía, como el invierno y el verano. Días de luz y de oscuridad. Él está detrás de todo esto.

Israel estaba sufriendo las consecuencias de sus actos. Dios les advirtió muchas veces que no dejarán de seguir Sus estatutos pero ellos abandonaron y descuidaron la Palabra de Dios. En unas ocasiones ellos eran probados para ver si confiaban en el Señor a pesar de que se estaban portando bien. Muchas veces Dios sacó a la luz muchas injusticias que estaban tapadas por medio de las pruebas; en otras, corregía a Sus hijos porque los amaba y enderezaba sus caminos. Muchas veces Dios permitía que el enemigo los rodeara para que no se olvidaran que no era con sus propias fuerzas sino con el Espíritu de Dios.

Espero que podamos hoy sostenernos, aferrarnos de la mano de Dios. Que sigamos clamando al Señor para que pronto nos socorra y que escuche nuestra oración, pero que a pesar de esto, seguir siendo fieles seguidores de Su amor y bondad, que nuestra esperanza este puesta firmemente en Él; no tenemos otra alternativa sino seguir Su respuesta. Aunque todavía no veamos la solución, Él será siempre nuestro Dios, nuestro Rey y Salvador.
