Today is May 7.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you.

Take a moment and quiet yourself. Take a deep breath. Welcome God’s presence. And say, “Come Holy Spirit.”

Today’s reading is from Psalm 93.

      The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty;
         the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength;
         indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.
      Your throne was established long ago;
         you are from all eternity.
      The seas have lifted up, LORD,
         the seas have lifted up their voice;
         the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
      Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
         mightier than the breakers of the sea—
         the LORD on high is mighty.
       Your statutes, LORD, stand firm;
         holiness adorns your house
         for endless days.

The psalmist sounds so certain and full of faith in this text. How are you feeling as you come to prayer today? What handful of words might describe how you are doing?

I love the psalms because they express a full breadth of human experience – from absolute faith to delight to certainty to lament to doubt. Sometimes, all in the same psalm. The psalms are a model for us of how to approach God in worship and prayer: totally vulnerable, emotions and all. Listen to the psalmist again and pay attention to one word picture that stands out to you.

Consider how writing your prayers out might help to deepen your devotional life. Perhaps you could take a few minutes as we end to write out a prayer to the Lord.

Lord God, Almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought me in safety to this new day: Preserve me with your mighty power, that I may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all I do, direct me to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
