What is a serial killer?
A serial killer is typically defined as a person who commits a series of murders, usually with significant intervals of time between them. These killings are often carried out in a similar fashion and are driven by a psychological urge or compulsion. Key characteristics of serial killers include:
1. **Multiple Murders**:
2. **Psychological Gratification**:
3. **Patterns or Characteristics**:
4. **Periods of Dormancy**:
5. **Compulsion**:
6. **Lack of Personal Connection**:
7. **Deceptive and Manipulative**:
One of the earliest people recorded that fit this bill nearly perfectly is the Han Dynasty ripper, Liu Pengli at the age of 29 will terrorize his inherited kingdom’s citizens, by murdering, plundering for the sport of it. Eventually a citizen will alert the emperor and the court would request his execution. Supposedly however, Liu would be banished to Shangyong and stripped of his sovereignty instead.
Today we explore this tale and provide much more context to it going over what we can glean from the few accounts of this era in China about the Han Dynasty and the possible political intrigue that would lead to this serial killer being banished and not executed for his heinous crimes.
We will ask the questions: How did this all come to be? Who was Liu Pengli? Why was he banished if he was a prince? How many people did he actually kill? And how much of this is true? All this and much more will be answered on Today’s Historical Quarrel.
