“When 9/11 happened the world stood still and through tragedy was suddenly filled with compassion and kindness. For Megan and her family it was overwhelming as they endured the suffering of a family member. It was the kindness and support from the community that inspired her to help others experiencing great loss, grief and suffering. Learn about the Heartworks community, a local grassroots movement of women committed to replicating and sustaining the palpable kindness witnessed in the wake after September 11, 2001.”

Megan McDowell, MSW, LPC is the Founder of the Heartworks Foundation; a grassroots movement of women committed to replicating and sustaining the palpable kindness witnessed in the wake following September 11, 2001. Inspired by the healing that takes place through gratitude, receiving and giving, the group offers support to people experiencing acute illness, injury or grief. The Heartworks Foundation was created by Megan McDowell in honor of the kindness shown to her family after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks which took the life of her brother-in-law, John Farrell. Megan lived at her sister’s home for six weeks after the attacks and witnessed the community and what felt like the world show up for her sister and four nieces and nephews. Heartworks is a daily, active gesture of remembering those lost on 9/11 and the response from our nation in the months that followed. Heartworks focuses on the power that kindness plays in resiliency and connection during this age of technology, political unrest and social change.
