In this week’s episode of the ArtistWorks Music Series podcast, our co-founder Patricia Butler sits down with Grammy Award-winning musician, 4-time IBMA “Mandolin Player of the Year,” and ArtistWorks master bluegrass mandolin instructor, Sierra Hull, to discuss the concept of “How to Find Your Own Sound.” Together, they explore the process of developing a unique voice as a player, determining how you want to sound on your instrument, and setting goals so that you can achieve your desired tones on your stringed instrument of choice.

Thanks for this excellent podcast. Sierra offers great advice on finding your own sound. One thing I've done, and encourage my students to do, is work on picking hand dynamics. Simply play one note or chord over and over while making small changes to their picking hand technique (e.g. move closer to the nut, closer to the bridge, pick harder, pick softer, change the angle of the pick, etc.). While the purpose of the exercise is to improve and expand dynamics, you also discover sounds that please you or that you gravitate towards and make them a regular part of your own sound.
