There is a human definition of honesty, and people will say that if you are authentic about your feelings, then you're being honest. But when you read the Manual for Teachers in A Course in Miracles, Jesus actually defines honesty as consistency, and clarifies consistency as a state of mind in which there is no conflict within oneself: "Honesty does not apply only to what you say. The term actually means consistency. There is nothing you say that contradicts what you think or do; no thought opposes any other thought; no act belies your word; and no word lacks agreement with another. Such are the truly honest. At no level are they in conflict with themselves. Therefore it is impossible for them to be in conflict with anyone or anything."(M-4.II.1.4-9)

By this definition, one cannot be "honestly angry" or "honestly in pain", because no one can be "consistently angry" or "consistently in pain". Anger, pain (or any form of upset) implies a conflict, or inconsistency, within oneself, which means one is not aligned with Truth. Only by being aligned with the Holy Spirit can one be consistent, and only by being aligned with the Truth can one be truly honest.
