Saul had the anointing lifted from him and it was given to young David. How these two acted and responded to events is telling. Saul became a poser with a distressing spirit upon him because he was no longer anointed to be king. He functioned outside of his jurisdiction. David on the other hand, had the heart that desired God. He was a genuine king. Though Saul was still king in fact, he was a poser who ruled by anger and fear. David was genuine who sought to defend God's reputation.
