On June 14, 2015, sheriff's deputies respond to a home just outside of Springfield, Missouri which belonged to Dee Dee Blanchard and her daughter Gypsy Rose, who allegedly suffered from several chronic conditions such as muscular dystrophy, leukemia, and asthma. They respond to calls from concerned neighbors that have not seen or heard from the pair in several days, aside from a foreboding message on their shared Facebook page. Upon entrance into the home, they find Dee Dee deceased, but there is no sign of Gypsy Rose. As this case unravels the world comes to learn that this "sick young girl", Gypsy, is actually a young woman who was the victim of Munchausen syndrome by Proxy, under the control of her mother.
