There is good news and bad news about the costs of two College Station public works projects.

The city council at its last meeting approved a change order in the replacement of water and wastewater lines in the Eastgate neighborhood between Texas and Walton and between Lincoln and Francis. Assistant public works director Emily Fisher says credit goes to the contractor to find savings of more than $345,000 dollars.

The savings will be more than offset by a $3.6 million dollar increase in the cost of expanding the Lick Creek wastewater treatment plant. Water services director Gary Mechler says materials and labor are more expensive. In two weeks, the council will consider an budget amendment to provide the money to start construction later this year. Weather permitting, completion is expected in the summer of 2021.
