Internal medicine is a specialty where scientific knowledge and clinical expertise is used to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases that affect adults. Internists may continue their education to focus on diseases of the heart (cardiology) or other subspecialties, but every internal medicine physician has spent three of their seven years in medical school or post-graduate school on subjects that affect a broad range of medical problems rather than on one organ system.
