Undeterred by the failure of their October attempt to capture Henderson Field, the Japanese high command ordered that yet another, still bigger, attempt be made in November. This resulted in two massive ship-to-ship battles between November 13 and 15, in which dozens of warships and planes, plus over 3500 soldiers, sailors, and airmen were lost. Good episode on one of the most interesting naval engagements of the war. But I think you left out a key detail about the battleship engagement. South Dakota got so beat up because she lost power, not from enemy action but from an electrical fault. To make matters worse, she was illuminated by the burning US destroyers, drawing fire with no way to fight back. By the time she regained power she had taken the 26 hits you described and had to withdraw. Her misfortune however worked to Washington's benefit because SD drew fire from Washington
