Class is in session!
On today’s episode of The GIST of It, co-hosts Ellen Hyslop and Steph Rotz are heading back to school to chat about a major legal battle involving the NCAA. A federal court heard arguments yesterday in the case of Johnson vs. NCAA, which argues that former collegiate athletes should have been paid an hourly wage, similar to other student workers.
College sports fan or not, this debate could impact the sports landscape for years to come, and the gals have you covered with every angle of this nuanced, complicated story. Grab that backpack and sharpen those pencils.

Loved the podcast but really worry about the ramifications for college athletes if they are deemed employees. Only a relative handful of universities make enough from their football program to fund all student athletes with an hourly wage. If athletes are employees, they will all have to be paid. You can't pick and choose sports. Schools won't be able to afford that and will cut or eliminate scholarships and programs, turning many into club sports. Ultimately a small percentage of athletes would benefit from the ruling (those few programs schools choose to pay). The vast majority of the athletes won't be D1 athletes anymore. Suit means well but isn't the answer.
