Deuteronomio 26: Señor, te daré lo mejor en señal de gratitud.

Deuteronomio 26:1-11:
“Cuando hayas entrado en la tierra que el SEÑOR tu Dios te da por heredad, y hayas tomado posesión de ella y la habites, entonces tomarás de las primicias de todos los frutos que saques de la tierra que el SEÑOR tu Dios te da, las pondrás en una canasta e irás al lugar que el SEÑOR tu Dios haya escogido para hacer habitar allí su nombre. Vendrás al sacerdote que haya en aquellos días, y le dirás: ‘Reconozco hoy ante el SEÑOR tu Dios que yo he entrado en la tierra que el SEÑOR juró a nuestros padres que nos daría’.
“El sacerdote tomará la canasta de tu mano y la pondrá delante del altar del SEÑOR tu Dios. Entonces hablarás y dirás delante del SEÑOR tu Dios: ‘Un arameo errante fue mi padre. Él descendió a Egipto y vivió allí con unos pocos hombres, y allí llegó a ser una nación grande, fuerte y numerosa. Los egipcios nos maltrataron, nos afligieron e impusieron sobre nosotros dura esclavitud. Pero clamamos al SEÑOR, Dios de nuestros padres, y el SEÑOR escuchó nuestra voz. Vio nuestra aflicción, nuestro trabajo forzado y nuestra opresión, y el SEÑOR nos sacó de Egipto con mano poderosa y brazo extendido, con gran terror, con señales y prodigios. Nos trajo a este lugar y nos dio esta tierra: una tierra que fluye leche y miel. Y ahora, oh SEÑOR, he aquí traigo las primicias del fruto de la tierra que tú me has dado’.
“Lo dejarás delante del SEÑOR tu Dios, y te postrarás delante del SEÑOR tu Dios. Entonces te regocijarás, tú con el levita y el forastero que esté en medio de ti, por todo el bien que el SEÑOR tu Dios te haya dado a ti y a tu casa.

En este capítulo vemos cómo Moises le enseñó a los israelitas la acción de agradecimiento que deben tener cuando entren a la tierra prometida. Cuando tomaran posesión de la tierra y recogieran el fruto, debían separar los primeros frutos como primicia, que es la primera ofrenda dedicada a Dios, y entregarla al sacerdote. La parte especial de ese momento solemne es que debían pronunciar una declaración importante, donde debían hacer memoria de su pasado, recordando sus orígenes. Que su padre Abraham era un anciano que Dios escogió, que algunos de sus descendientes vivieron en Egipto y luego fueron sometidos a esclavitud y suplicaron al Señor que los salvara; y ¡Dios los oyó, salvándolos, liberándolos y regalándoles esa tierra llena de abundancia!

Esto nos muestra que todos debemos hacer lo mismo. Debemos poner como prioridad al Señor. Que todas las mañanas ofrezcamos al Señor los primeros minutos de nuestro día en oración. Que podamos ofrecer adoración y alabanza al Señor con los primeros movimientos de nuestro cuerpo y las primeras palabras de nuestra boca. Que los primeros pensamientos que tengamos sean el recordar las bondades y las misericordias del Señor con nosotros.

Cuando tú estés por entregar los diezmos y ofrendas en el canasto o en el alfolí o en el cofre destinado para esto en la congregación, primero toma unos segundos para pensar de dónde Dios te sacó y adónde te ha llevado. Recuerda esa oración desesperada que hiciste cuando más necesitabas del Señor y Él te escuchó. Recuerda cuando Él siempre te socorre, restaura tu vida, cuando te devolvió o restauró tu hogar, cuando sanó tu cuerpo y tu corazón de heridas, cuando inundó de paz tu mente atribulada, cuando liberó tu espíritu atormentado. Recuerda todo lo que Dios ha hecho por ti.
Nunca le des al Señor lo que te sobra. Dale lo mejor de ti. Tu tiempo, tus talentos, tus dones, tu atención. No esperemos a estar en necesidad para traer ofrendas de gratitud y de amor. Dale las primicias de tu ser.

Deuteronomy 26:1-11:
“And it shall be, when you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you possess it and dwell in it, that you shall take some of the first of all the produce of the ground, which you shall bring from your land that the Lord your God is giving you, and put it in a basket and go to the place where the Lord your God chooses to make His name abide. And you shall go to the one who is priest in those days, and say to him, ‘I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come to the country which the Lord swore to our fathers to give us.’
“Then the priest shall take the basket out of your hand and set it down before the altar of the Lord your God. And you shall answer and say before the Lord your God: ‘My father was a Syrian, about to perish, and he went down to Egypt and dwelt there, few in number; and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. But the Egyptians mistreated us, afflicted us, and laid hard bondage on us. Then we cried out to the Lord God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and looked on our affliction and our labor and our oppression. So the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders. He has brought us to this place and has given us this land, “a land flowing with milk and honey”; and now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land which you, O Lord, have given me.’
“Then you shall set it before the Lord your God, and worship before the Lord your God. So you shall rejoice in every good thing which the Lord your God has given to you and your house, you and the Levite and the stranger who is among you.

In this chapter we see how Moses taught the Israelites the action of gratitude they must have when they enter the promised land. When they took possession of the land and gathered the fruit, they had to separate the first fruits as the firstfruits, which is the first offering dedicated to God, and deliver it to the priest. The special part of that solemn moment is that they had to pronounce an important declaration, where they had to remember their past, remembering their origins. That their father Abraham was an old man that God chose, that some of their descendants lived in Egypt and then were subjected to slavery and begged the Lord to save them; and God heard them, saving, freeing them and giving them that land full of abundance!

This shows us that we should all do the same. We must put the Lord first. That every morning we offer the Lord the first minutes of our day in prayer. That we offer worship and praise to the Lord with the first movements of our body and the first words of our mouth. That the first thoughts we have are to remember the goodness and mercies of the Lord with us.

When you are about to deliver the tithes and offerings in the basket or in the storehouse or in the chest destined for this in the congregation, first take a few seconds to think about where God took you from and where He has taken you. Remember that desperate prayer you made when you needed the Lord the most and He heard you. Remember when He always helps you, restores your life, when He gave you back or restored your home, when He healed your body and your heart from wounds, when He flooded your troubled mind with peace, when He freed your tormented spirit. Remember all that God has done for you.
Never give the Lord what you have left over. Give Him the best of you. Your time, your talents, your gifts, your attention. Let us not wait until we are in need to bring offerings of gratitude and love. Give Him the firstfruits of your being.
