The plan to open our borders is about staggering the risk.
Fully vaccinated New Zealanders can fly home from Australia without MIQ from January 16.
They must self-isolate for seven days and undergo repeated testing.
Since August 23, no fully vaccinated Aussie travellers in MIQ have tested positive for Covid.
Covid Minister Chris Hipkins told Heather du Plessis Allan they don't want to shovel extra risk on New Zealand all at once.
“Countries that have done too much too soon, have often found that they end up dealing with quite significant case numbers, significant outbreaks and they end up having to go back and reimpose restrictions.”
