Action taken at the last Bryan city council meeting included updating the anti smoking ordinance to follow a new state law that starts September first.

One of three public speakers wanted the council to close loopholes was Brazos County health district educator Mary Parrish.

Another loophole raised by Patricia Bailey Jones of the Smoke Free Bryan organization involved fraternal organizations.

Councilman Prentiss Madison received a clarification of Jones statement from city manager Kean Register, who said a state license is required to sell cigarettes.

Another Smoke Free Bryan member, Devorah Yarbrough, brought up the health impact to employees exposed to second hand smoke.

Deputy city manager Hugh Walker told councilmen Brent Hairston and Mike Southerland a smoking ban will continue in Bryan restaurants.
