In this chapter God told Moses and Eleazar, the priest, to number all of the men able to go to war.

The number of fighting men in this census came to 601,730. The number of fighting men taken in the first census was 603,550.

Moses said, none of the fighting men in the current census was from the previous generation, except Joshua and Caleb.

We note that, God, made a point of saying Caleb would inherit the promised land because he had a another spirit “with” him.

Numbers 14:21 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.

Numbers 14:22 Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;

Numbers 14:23 Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:

Numbers 14:24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.

The others had a spirit “with” them, that did not come from God. We note that Jesus said, in Matthew chapter 28 verse 20, He will be “with” us always, even unto the end of the world.

Paul called the spirit, the others had “with” them, the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that works in the children of disobedience in Ephesians chapter 2 verse 2.

And since they were “with” that spirit, or that spirit was "with" them they did not inherit the promised land.

In the last chapter 24,000 people died. They did not inherit the promised land. Instead of inheriting the promised land, they inherited the wilderness in death, picturing the dreadful desolate place God has prepared for the devil and his angels and those "with" them, that is those who follow them along the path of disobedience.

The rebels, the murmurers, the idol worshippers and the fornicators did not inherit the promised land, they all died outside of it.

We note, Peter said, in 2 Peter chapter 2 verse 4, that as God did not spare the angels who sinned against him but cast them into hell, and chains of darkness, he will not spare us either, if continue to live in sin.

Jude said in Jude 1 verse 6, that the angels left their first estate and they left their own habitation.

God who is the source of life, was their habitation. They left the Living God. They left the one whose habitation is righteousness and truth.

Psalms 97:1 The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.

Psalms 97:2 Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.


We note that Jesus said, the devil abode not in the truth.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.


The fallen angels left the truth, they started off good but they left it. They moved away from it, it didn’t have any authority in their lives.

They wanted nothing to do with God’s ways, his customs, or his commandments. So they disobeyed Him. They went their own way, and established their own truth.

Jesus doesn't want that to happen to us. He want’s us to continue obeying him, until the end of our lives. So He told us to continue in His word, this is how we become true disciples.

John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Jesus would have us follow Paul’s example. Paul kept the faith, he continued in the word of God, until the end of his life.

When it was time for Paul to leave his tabernacle, he said, he had finished his course and was ready to receive a crown of righteousness.

He would receive a crown of righteousness because he lived a righteous life.

He had to fight and overcome sin and temptation like all of us. But he had fought and won.

2 Timothy 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
