In this episode we begin studying the Book of Leviticus. In this episode Moses is given laws for burnt offerings.

Once again he is told that the offering is voluntary. Those wanting to bring an offering is to bring it to the door of the tabernacle.

We note that the offerer is required to kill the sacrificial animal and NOT the priest.

The offerer is required to cut its throat, skin it, and the priest caught the blood into basins and sprinkled it upon the altar.

God said the offering was accepted to make atonement for the person.

Thayer’s says atonement means to exchange figuratively an adjustment, that is, restoration to the divine favor, and reconciliation.

After making the sacrifice the offerer was made right with God. He was reconciled to God and the enmity that separated the man from God was torn asunder.

God accepted Christ's offering to make atonement for us, we've been made right with God and Christ’s beckons us to come to him to receive and experience the benefits of being reconciled to God.

Jesus said, in Revelation chapter 3 verse 20, Behold I stand at the door and knock if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him and sup with him and he with me.

We note that if the offerer could not afford to bring an ox, a sheep or goat, he could bring a bird.

If they brought a bird to be sacrificed, the crop of the bird was plucked away and cast to the east side of the altar by the ashes. The crop was the stomach of the bird that held the dung.

The BDB says, the east refers to the front, aforetime, from of old, of ancient time.

Since the crop was cast to the east side of the Altar, God was declaring that the old order of things would be done away and cast to the side like dung.

Because of His sacrifice, the wicked would be cast aside, they will no longer rule the earth.

And we see a fading away of the old order of things, and the beginning of the new with the birth of the Messiah; When Mary and Jospeh brought Jesus to the temple to be dedicated to the Lord.

They were poor and could not afford to bring a bullock or sheep to sacrifice to the Lord, so in keeping with the law they brought a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons to the temple in Jerusalem since the law said, every male that opened the womb shall be holy to the Lord.

With this very act, the splitting of the birds and casting aside the dung to the east, God through Christ initiated the regeneration, he started making all things new.

A man named Simeon was in the temple when they came to make the offering.

When He saw Jesus, he told Mary and Joseph, that some would rise because of their Son and some would fall because of Him. That he would be a light to the Gentiles and the glory of Israel.

A prophetess named Anna was also in the temple. After she saw the infant Messiah, she went throughout Jerusalem, telling people that the redemption of Israel had come.

Here’s the text:

Luke 2:22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

Luke 2:23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

Luke 2:24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

Luke 2:25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

Luke 2:26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

Luke 2:27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

Luke 2:28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

Luke 2:29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

Luke 2:30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

Luke 2:31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

Luke 2:32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

Luke 2:33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

Luke 2:34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

Luke 2:35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

Luke 2:36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

Luke 2:37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

Luke 2:38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

Luke 2:39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

Luke 2:40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
