In this episode we continue studying The Book of Genesis. In this episode Abraham sends his servant to Haran, the land of his kindred to find a wife for Isaac.

His servant met Rebekah at a well outside the city. This account is similar to John chapter 4 verses 10-42. In our current text Abraham’s servant, is near a well, and asked a woman for water.

In John chapter 4 verses 7 through 42. Jesus is at a well and he asked a woman for water. She said, you don’t have anything to draw it with. Rebekah could have said the same thing but she didn’t she used her pitcher and gave Abraham’s servant water.

Abraham’s servant came with 10 camels, loaded with goods, but Jesus offered the woman living water, he didn’t have gold or silver or other earthly riches.

The woman at the well with Jesus, had a jar for water but basically declined to give him water. And he said, if you knew the gift of God and who it is that was asking you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.

She again responded by mentioning his lack of a vessel to get the water. She said, sir the well is deep and you don’t have anything to draw with, so where do you get this living water.

She was focused on him not having his own water jar. He kept talking about water but didn’t have anything to draw up the water.

But he was talking about the gift of the Holy Spirit. She didn’t realize she was the vessel and he was the giver of living water.

Jesus speaks about living water In John chapter 7 verses 37 through 39: Here's the text:

John 7:37  In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

John 7:38  He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

John 7:39  (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

The events in the Old Testament pointed to Christ. The man at the well came loaded with material riches, gold, silver and other precious gifts,

Jesus came loaded with the riches of grace, the forgiveness of sins, resulting in eternal life, that’s secured by the Holy Spirit.

We also note that it's possible that Rebekah is a continuation of the symbolical nature of the church, who is the bride of Christ, she and Isaac moved into Sarah’s tent, after she died.

Rebekah is noted for her beauty, meekness and hard working nature. She is a water bearer, providing water to those in the household of God.

Sarah sent away, the mockers and those who didn’t want to work.

Now Rebekah, refreshes the thirsty one’s that come to her. They are loaded with gifts, the gifts of teaching, healing, prophecy, miracles, helps, governments and tongues (1 Corinthians chapter 12 verse 28).

Paul said, Christ loved the church and gave himself for it. That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of the water by the word.

That he might present to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish. (Ephesians 5:24-25).

So here we have Rebekah a type of the church, doing the work Christ has called her to do.

The people coming to her now, will be thirsty, needing to be refreshed by the word of God.

Christ will bring the people to her but she must be willing to give them the pure water of the word, the word will sanctify them and cleanse them.

It's the word of God that cleanses us from sin. No wonder the evil one doesn't want the real word of God preached.

Jesus said in John 15:3  Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
