In this episode we begin studying the book of Genesis. In chapter one, we discover that the purpose of this chapter is to reveal who made the earth, and everything therein, including men and women and how he made them.

The text says the Spirit of God moved upon the waters that covered the earth.God moved upon the waters, to determine how long and wide the earth would be, where he would place the foundations and lay the corner stone.

We discover that the earth was filled with darkness but why?

Did something happen, that caused the world to become a place filled with darkness, a place without form and void, a place that needed to be replenished?

God used the same word replenish after the flood when he spoke with Noah in Genesis chapter 9 verse 1. Here’s the text:

Genesis 9:1  And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.

Again Genesis 1:2 says, And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Without form means to lie waste; a desolation (of surface), that is, desert; figuratively a worthless thing; confusion, empty place, without form, nothing, (thing of) nought, vain, vanity, waste, wilderness.

And void superficially, an undistinguishable ruin: emptiness, void.

Strongs says, Darkness, means the dark; figuratively misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness, night, obscurity.

The deep means an abyss (as a surging mass of water), especially the deep, the main sea or the subterranean water supply, deep (place), to put in commotion; to disturb, drive, destroy: consume, crush, trouble, vex.

This is important because Jeremiah uses similar language to describe the conditions of his time. When His people had turned away from God to worship idols. Here’s the text:

Jeremiah 4:23  I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.

As we take our journey through the Bible we may discover something happened to the earth to make it be without form and void. That something happened to cause the abyss to cover the earth, requiring division and restocking.

We don’t know if something happened or not, scripture alludes to it but it’s hard to tell right now. That’s the fun of studying the Bible. Who know’s what treasure we will find.
