In this episode we continue studying the book of Exodus. In this episode God declares that he will reveal himself to the Israelites by the Name of Jehovah.

He had previously revealed himself to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as God Almighty. Now he’s about to show them a different side of his nature or character.

His going to be known to them by the name of Jehovah which means the existing one or eternal one.
Coming from a Hebrew word meaning, to be, to become, to come to pass, to happen, to come about, to be done, to occur, to take place, to accompany, to be with.

We note that when “come to pass” or when “it came to pass” is used in scripture it precedes an important event or astonishing work God performed for his people.

An important event, that points to God Almighty as Jehovah, the God who causes great things to come to pass on behalf of his people is found in Joshua chapter 3 verses 13 through 17. Here’s the text:

Joshua 3:13 And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap.

Joshua 3:14 And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people;

Joshua 3:15 And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)

Joshua 3:16 That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.

Joshua 3:17 And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.

The Israelites will know him as Jehovah, because it will come to pass that he will deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians, when He executes judgment upon them.

Exodus chapter 12 verse 29 says, and" it came to pass" at midnight God smote Egypts firstborn. Here’s the text:

Exodus 12:29 And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle. God will

We note that God said, he would bring the children of Israel out of Egyptian bondage and redeem them with an out stretched arm and with great judgment.

The AHLB says to redeem means to avenge as is the role of the nearest relative to redeem one in slavery or avenge his murder.

Pharaoh, was holding his firstborn son in slavery and afflicting him with extreme harshness and cruelty.

And as Israel’s kinsman redeemer he was going to redeem Israel. He would set them free from slavery and also act upon upon his role as an avenger of blood.

We note that the avenger of blood was responsible for avenging the blood of a relative who was murdered.

The Egyptians had gone door to door, and snatched the children of his firstborn son from their parents and tossed them into the river and many of Israels seed died from being beaten by their taskmasters.
For these things he would execute judgment upn them.

We note that it looks like what Pharaoh feared had come upon him, he feared the children of Israel would join one of his enemies and leave the land. God was his enemy and they would surely leave the land but they wouldn’t have to fight to leave the land because God would fight for them but they would have to fight to inherit the promised land.

In this we see that God has delivered us out of Egypt, a picture of sin but we have to fight to inherit the promised land. If we want to inherit the promised kingdom of God we have to war against the flesh.

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Galatians 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

Galatians 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

Galatians 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Galatians 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Galatians 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
