In this episode we continue studying the Book of Exodus. In this episode, Moses read the book of the covenant to the people.

The covenant included the 10 commandments, the laws and judgments regarding slaves, the laws regarding property and betrothal, and the laws about witnesses and bowing down to idols.

The people agreed to keep all of the words of the covenant and after they agreed to keep the covenant. Moses sprinkled blood on them saying, “Behold the Blood of the Covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words.”

The blood was the sign of the covenant. By keeping the words of the covenant, they would find life. Leviticus chapter 18 verse 5 says,

Leviticus 18:5 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD.

We note that the people had a mind to obey God. They wanted to obey God but so far, they’ve murmured and complained against Him and Moses. They wished they had died in Egypt because at least they had food in EGYPT.

They were told not to gather Manna on the Sabbath but they did. They were told not to save any over night except on Sabbath eve, but they did.

One minute they were singing the song of Moses and the next they were saying, Is the Lord with us not? If he is, why don’t we have any water?

This I love God one minute and the next minute wanting to die and go back into sin and bondage may also, plague us at times.

And this points us to what Paul said about the flesh and the spirit, they are contrary to one another, that they war against each other and the good that, even Paul wanted to do, he couldn’t do because of the wicked, wretched nature he was born with.

Paul was transparent and told the church, that he too wrestled with sin. That the things he wanted to do he wasn’t doing them, but the sinful things he didn’t want to do, those were the things he found himself doing, and there seemed to be no hope for him, obeying God seemed impossible, because it seemed like something else was controlling him, making him do what he didn’t want to do.

But he did not give up, He discovered the answer was Jesus. Here's the text:

Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

Romans 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

He first had to acknowledge that the law was good.

Romans 7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

Then he discovered that the law was just the schoolmaster, that was meant to bring him to Christ.

Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

Galatians 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

Mounce says a school master was a pedagogue, a child tender, a person, usually a slave or freedman, to whom the care of the boys of a family was committed, whose duty it was to attend them at their play and lead them to and from the public school, and exercise a constant superintendence over their conduct and safety.

After having to submit to the schoolmaster, Paul grew up and put away childish things and came to faith in Christ.

It was his faith in Christ that saved him, because Jesus baptizes us with the Holy Spirit, then we no longer need the schoolmaster, because the law is written in our hearts and we no longer obey the flesh because our hearts have been converted.

Sin comes out of the heart and once the spirit dwells there the bondage to sin is broken.
