A teacher once told me that saying, "I'm sorry for your pain" is helpful for a lot of situations where people are striking out. It covers a lot in such a simple phrase.

I found that working with people in social services and addicts, we learned to understand that it isn't personal but understanding their pain, anger and shame.when we know yourselves, we don't take hurtful word slung at us personally

"Mirroring" is effective in helping people to feel heard....a lot of times people will calm down when they feel heard and understood, weather you agree with them or not.

I've found saying the obvious, "Wow, this is a heated topic, isn't it?" catches people off guard and sometimes they check themselves..."Since this is a hot topic, perhaps we all need to take a breath before we continue in a manner that is respectful to all involved."...etc...
