Edgar Valdez Villarreal, also known as "La Barbie," is a former Mexican-American drug lord and cartel leader. He was born on August 11, 1973, in Laredo, Texas. La Barbie gained notoriety for his involvement in the drug trade and his association with the Beltrán-Leyva Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel.
Valdez Villarreal initially started as a small-time drug dealer and gradually climbed the ranks within the criminal organizations. He became a high-ranking member of the Beltrán-Leyva Cartel, which was initially linked to the powerful Sinaloa Cartel but later split off due to internal conflicts. La Barbie was known for his involvement in the trafficking of cocaine from Mexico to the United States.
His nickname, "La Barbie," was derived from his fair complexion and blue eyes, which contrasted with traditional cartel members' appearances. He is believed to have played a role in the violent conflicts between rival cartels and was also involved in numerous criminal activities, including kidnappings, extortion, and drug trafficking.
In 2010, Valdez Villarreal was arrested by Mexican authorities. He was later extradited to the United States, where he faced charges related to drug trafficking, money laundering, and organized crime. In January 2016, he pleaded guilty to these charges in a U.S. federal court. He was subsequently sentenced to 49 years in prison in 2018.
