Here are some reasons why Ecuador has been of interest to drug traffickers:
  1. Geographical Location: Ecuador is strategically located between two major cocaine-producing countries, Colombia and Peru. This geographical position makes it a potential transit route for drug shipments heading to international markets, including North America and Europe.
  2. Transshipment Route: Ecuador's long coastline and numerous ports provide opportunities for drug traffickers to move illicit goods discreetly. Narcotics can be smuggled through maritime routes, taking advantage of the country's extensive coastline facing the Pacific Ocean.
  3. Geographical Diversity: Ecuador's diverse geography, which includes dense jungles, coastal areas, and the Andes mountain range, offers hiding places and routes for trafficking operations. These varied terrains can make it challenging for law enforcement to effectively monitor and interdict illicit activities.
  4. Weaker Law Enforcement Infrastructure: While the Ecuadorian government has taken steps to combat drug trafficking, its law enforcement and judicial infrastructure may not be as robust as in some neighboring countries. This can create opportunities for traffickers to exploit weaknesses and operate with relative impunity.
  5. Corruption and Bribery: Like in many countries affected by the drug trade, corruption within law enforcement agencies, border control, and government officials can facilitate the movement of illicit substances. Narco traffickers may attempt to bribe officials to look the other way or assist in their operations.
  6. Economic Factors: Some areas within Ecuador may experience economic challenges, making them vulnerable to criminal activities like drug cultivation and trafficking. The lure of financial gain from the drug trade can be attractive in regions with limited legitimate economic opportunities.
  7. Regional Instability: The presence of drug production and trafficking in neighboring countries like Colombia can spill over into Ecuador, as criminal groups seek to establish or expand their operations in more stable areas.

With all of that in mind, it's no wonder that the cartels have gained so much power within Ecuador and recently we seen it all come to a head with the assassination of Fernando Villavicencio. In this episode, we are taking a look at the hit and how it might play out in the future.
