Helium’s mission has been to rapidly build open, affordable, and secure global wireless networks that are owned and operated by the people. The first real-world implementation of this vision was launched in 2019 for the Internet of Things (IoT), the most underserved market in the telecommunications industry. To address the demand to support additional networks, the community proposed HIP 51 a few months ago — a proposal to evolve Helium into a “network of networks,” opening the door for multiple network protocols and multiple tokens to exist in the ecosystem. The first new network protocol to launch under this proposed system would be Helium 5G. 5G Hotspot owners would earn a new token, called MOBILE, for providing 5G coverage via a new Proof-of-Coverage system or by transferring data across the network via Data Credits. Existing LoRaWAN miners begin earning a new token, called IOT.
