The Scala sisters are putting down roots in a different kind of ‘homestead’. During the onset of the pandemic, Mary Kathryn and Jacqueline were both researching new ideas and paths. They serendipitously discovered an innovative community led initiative that they felt compelled to pursue – freight farming. Mary Kathryn and Jacqueline quickly learned the ropes of hydroponic farming and built a ‘Homestead’ freight farm in a Chicago suburb. Their mission is to bring these farms to more communities in the US and unlock hyperlocal food production!
