Today’s guest is Judy Heumann. Judy, who contracted polio in 1949 and uses a wheelchair for her mobility, is a lifelong advocate for the rights of disabled people.

She has played a role in the development and implementation of major legislation including
the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act,
the Americans with Disability Act and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Judy is an internationally recognized leader in the disability rights community. She served in the Clinton and Obama Administrations and was a Senior Fellow at the Ford Foundation.

Her recently released memoir called “Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist,” was audio recorded by Ali Stroker who is the first wheelchair actor to perform on Broadway. Judy is also featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary film Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution.

These days, among other things, Judy is the producer of The Heumann Perspective, a podcast and YouTube channel that aims to share the beauty of the disability community.
