Stefan Duma is the Harry C. Wyatt Professor of Engineering at Virginia Tech and the Executive Director of the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS). In this position, Dr. Duma leads over 200 faculty across the College of Engineering and the College of Science involving large-scale interdisciplinary research activities in excess of $80 million/year. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Duma was the Department Head for Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics (BEAM) for seven years. As Department Head Dr. Duma was responsible for 55 faculty who advise over 175 graduate students and teach fundamental mechanics to over 2,500 undergraduate students each year. Additionally, Dr. Duma is the founding Director of the Center for Injury Biomechanics (CIB) and has personally been awarded over $51 million in research funding from the NIH, NSF, DOD, DOT, and a range in industrial sponsors. His research includes automobile safety, military restraints, and sport biomechanics applications. He has published over 400 technical papers in the field of injury biomechanics including over 100 peer-reviewed journal papers and two books. Dr. Duma is a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society, a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine, and a Fellow of the American Institute for Medicine and Biology in Engineering. Dr. Duma is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of Biomedical Engineering.
