Sono sempre molto sensibile ai problemi legati all'accesso, sia che si tratti di una scala che rende impossibile l'accesso a una persona che ha problemi di deambulazione o che si tratti di un sito che presenta le informazioni in modo difficile da raggiungere per le persone che invece vogliono leggere qualcosa.

Tra l'altro, l'usabilità è anche una materia che io ho insegnato per un periodo, che mi sta veramente molto a cuore, perché creare un sito che ha un'architettura aggrovigliata e che fa sentire l'utente perso significa privare del diritto di accedere alle informazioni.

Mi capita, purtroppo spesso, di vedere dei siti che appunto hanno o un'architettura impossibile da navigare dove usano magari diversi termini per indicare la stessa cosa o hanno ventimila sottomenù che se tu non sai esattamente quello che stai cercando, e - diciamo la verità - spesso noi non sappiamo quello che cerchiamo, abbiamo una vaga idea di quello che cerchiamo, ma poi aspettiamo di trovarlo per dire ah ecco, questo è quello che cercavo.

Comunque mi è capitato proprio oggi di accedere a un sito, il sito di un evento che in questi giorni è in città, un evento, una manifestazione che prevede diversi eventi, appunto perché è una manifestazione che mi interessa, volevo vedere cosa proponesse oggi il calendario, quindi mi trovavo fuori casa, sono entrata nel sito di questa manifestazione usando il mio cellulare e poi ho cercato, naturalmente, 'programma'. Ho cliccato su un bottone bello grande che diceva 'programma' (bello! Clicco!) E mi si apre un'altra schermata dove c'è un altro bottone che, altrettanto bello grande, dice 'scarica pdf'.

E io già sono rimasta così, come pdf? Come faccio nel mio cellulare, che poi tra l'altro è un cellulare molto piccolo perché l'ho scelto apposta piccolo perché doveva stare nella tasca dei miei pantaloni e io poi ho le mani piccole, che me ne faccio di un un telefono gigantesco se poi la mano è piccola? Quindi già, spaventatissima, ho aperto il pdf, che è un documento di 60 pagine.

Ora non ha senso dire il nome della manifestazione, chi se ne frega, voglio solo dire: quando proponete un programma, veramente il PDF di 60 pagine, quale che sia il problema, quale che siano le altre opzioni, è sicuramente l'opzione peggiore. Usate menù a tendina, usate altri metodi per comunicare il programma alle persone che vogliono invece partecipare.

Ora vabbè, sono a casa, mi aprirò dal mio computer grande, con lo schermo grande, scaricherò le 60 pagine di pdf e niente, mi guarderò che cosa c'è alla manifestazione oggi che ripeto, è una manifestazione che mi interessa, quindi vabbè, farò questo passo in più.

By the way, usability is also a subject that I taught for a while, so, it is really close to my heart, because to create a site that has a tangled architecture and makes the user feel lost is to deprive them of the right to access information.

I happen, unfortunately often, to see sites that just have either an impossible to navigate architecture where they use i.e. different terms to mean the same thing or they have twenty thousand submenus that if you don't know exactly what you're looking for, and -- let's face it -- we often don't know what we're looking for, we have a vague idea of what we're looking for, but then we wait until we find it to say ah here it is, this is what I was looking for.
Anyway, I happened just today to access a site, the site of an event that is in town these days, a festival that has several events, and because it is an event that interests me, I wanted to see what the calendar offered today, so I was out of the house, I entered the site of this festival using my cell phone and then I searched, of course, 'program'. I clicked on a nice big button that reads 'program ' (nice! let's click!) and another screen pops up where there is another button that, just as nice big, reads 'download pdf'.

And I already kind of frozen, what do you mean pdf? How can I manage on my cell phone, which by the way is a very small cell phone because I chose it on purpose small because it had to fit in the pocket of my pants and I have small hands, what do I do with a gigantic phone if my hand is small? So already, terrified, I opened the pdf, and it is a 60-page document.

Now there is no point in saying the name of the festival, who cares, I just want to say: when you propose a program, really the 60-page PDF, whatever the problem is, whatever the other options are, it is definitely the worst option. Use drop-down menus, use other methods to communicate the program to people who want to participate.
