In episode 200 of Trace Evidence we examine one of the most shocking, disturbing and haunting murders in Texas history -- The Shocking Murder of Betty Williams.

Odessa Texas, 1961. Seventeen year old Betty Williams goes missing from her bedroom sometime during the night. At first investigators don't believe there's any reason to worry, it's not uncommon for seventeen year old's to sneak out or run off for a few hours. As a matter of procedure, an investigator heads to Odessa High School to find out if anyone knew where Betty was.

They could have never imagined what happened next. John Mack Herring, a popular football player at the school, and Betty's ex-boyfriend, makes a shocking confession. He killed Betty the night before and hid her body beneath the muddy waters of a rural stock pond. When detectives ask why, Herring simply replies "Because she asked me to."

Herring explained that Betty had begged him to end her life, saying she was miserable and wanted to escape from this world. In Herring's own words, moments before firing the fatal shot, he asked for a kiss to remember her by, and Betty obliged. The media christened the crime "The Kiss and Kill Murder."

The town rallies behind the good looking and smart Mack Herring, a boy from the right side of the tracks from a good family while they demonize Betty, a harlot who seduced a tender teen into committing a hideous and violent act. Even in death, Betty Williams was blamed for the horrible crime committed against her.

It's funny that you bring up the point that maybe it was Betty that dumped Mac because I thought that from the beginning. He was mad, and the fact that she dumped him for his best friend? (Or at least friend) was just unacceptable for the Golden boy. Add to that that he knew for a fact they were sleeping together because she was happy to sleep with other boys (I am not judging her... Simply stating a fact.) How dare she? I'm surprised he didn't kill them both.

This is the saddest story I've ever heard you do and you've done some doozies. I'm so angry I don't even know what to say and so broken hearted for this young woman. She was a child, a 17-year-old confused child, the judge seems to have forgotten that. She had sex, so what? Apparently everyone also forgot that the boys were ALSO having sex... She wasn't doing it by herself! I am so tired of the double standard and the thought that the boy couldn't possibly have initiated things - obviously she's a wanton woman who should not be trusted with any male on the planet because she's just so desirable and persuasive he simply can't help himself... Are you kidding me? And unfortunately, as much as we like to believe they have... Things haven't changed that much. Women aren't vilified "as much" As we used to be but it's been proven way too many times that if something goes wrong during that sexual encounter, 95% of the time it's the woman's fault. When are people going to pull their heads out and realize biology is biology is biology is biology and things happen when hormones get involved? It's sex - it's not like she killed anybody.

As much as the Texas Monthly article and this is set up to make Christians and Odessans look backwards, except for the murder this was a typical high school drama. A passionate girl chasing the boys for attention, the popular kids taking advantage of the others in ways they won't understand the cruelty of until much later, everyone trying to define themselves with or against their parent and family values. What seems to have been the catalyst was either the emotional manipulation that Betty had learned at home or the lack of empathy in Mack (both of which are also typical in high school dramas).

Episode 200 is the sadest episode yet. It's unbelievable that people at that period of time where so shallow and blind. A massive carriage of justice. Betty deserves better then what was given to her. So so sad!!!!
