RE Manic Depression and Bipolar, I'd argue Manic Depression was a more accurate term, as someone with bipolar. Because bipolar implies you have 2 poles, which is a pretty limiting concept that ignores mixed episodes. Manic depression could apply for all 3 states; Manic, Depression, and mixed episodes are functionally both manic and depressive. So Manic Depression has an implied bipolarity but doesn't leave 0 room for mixed episodes. If you try to explain mixed episodes in a diagram of 2 poles of mania and depression, it'd imply in the middle is a mixed episode, but you'd also put 'normal' in the middle. It makes no sense. Mixed episodes are one of the most dangerous states and I'm much, much more severely ill when mixed than when I'm manic or psychotically depressed. (Specifically because in my case mixed episodes always come with psychosis and extremely quick behaviour on sui* thoughts). It's probably the least normal I ever am. So yeah, I'd argue the old term isn't identical, I think it's a bit more accurate. I'd also argue that DID / Multiple Personality Disorder isn't a personality disorder, so it makes sense to have changed that, because it could easily get the stigma of personality disorders which could confuse people about what to expect from it. Focusing on the fact that it's about identity and dissociation seems more accurate for sure 😄
