Edward's body was found face up in the Grand River in Brantford, Ontario on June 27th, 1975. The cause of death was confirmed to be drowning. The case was closed quickly as law enforcement deemed that he died while swimming.

None of these early conclusions made sense. By the time law enforcement re-opened the case in 2003, the entire original case file has been destroyed.
