Part 2)) This is a topic that is almost always avoided, although there is much literature out there if you specifically look for it. This puts the whole Indian conflict into context- the Trail of Tears, the forced relocations, the slaughter of the Buffalo- all were direct responses to the marauding Comanche tribe, and sadly, all Natives were blamed by the general population, who seemingly made no distinction between tribes. In truth, the differences between tribes was at times quite vast. Members of different tribes that had been nearly killed off, such as the peaceful Tonkawa, actually helped the Rangers for a time. Had I not heard direct family accounts of what happened, I never would have known. You guys seem interested in this part of history so I urge you to look into this aspect.

Growing up in Texas in the 1980s, my grandfather told me many stories about his grandfather who was a Texas Ranger and spent years fighting the Comanche. They were absolutely psychotic. They didn't just kill you... they would bring you back to their camp and test out the most brutal methods of torture they could imagine for months before they allowed you to escape into the sweet release of death. They were not merely "defending their land", in fact they subjected all other tribes they encountered to the exact same treatment. It was a bid to expand their territory and TAKE land from others. Whites, Apaches, it didn't matter. The Apaches were nearly driven into extinction at the hands of the Comanche.
