Ed Chung guest hosts today's show. He is the Vice President for Criminal Justice Reform at American Progress.

The theme of today's show is 'protecting civil rights in the age of Trump.'

Roy Austin, former Deputy Assistant to President Obama for the Office of Urban Affairs, Justice and Opportunity, joins Ed for the first half hour of the show. The two discuss how the Trump administration is trying to roll back progress that the Obama administration made in multiple areas in regard to racial justice and equality.

During the final segment of the show, Ed is joined by Becky Monroe and Suman Raghunathan. Becky is Director of the Stop Hate Project at the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Suman is Executive Director of South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT). They discuss hate crimes in the age of Trump and how there appears to have been an increase in hate crimes motivated by race or religion over the past few months,

Ed's Twitter handle is @EdChungTweets. Before working at the Center for American Progress, he served as senior adviser on criminal justice, policing, and civil rights issues for the Assistant Attorney General of the Office of Justice Programs at the U.S. Department of Justice.

In that capacity, Chung coordinated a national initiative for building trust between the justice system and the communities it serves, as well as the Obama administration’s violence reduction and second-chance efforts under the My Brother’s Keeper initiative.

Chung also held positions in the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, including special counsel to the assistant attorney general and federal prosecutor with the Criminal Section, where he received the John Marshall Award for successfully prosecuting the first case under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009.
