  • UMD17: Kerry McCoy kicking off the first day of practice in College Park

    13 OCT 2015 · The wrestling season has officially arrived as the University of Maryland wrestling team opened up practice on October 10. On Episode 17 of the Maryland Mat Chat, head coach Kerry McCoy will break down the first day of practice, analyze the schedule and talk a little bit about the lineup that will be on the mats in College Park this season. Coach McCoy is eyeing several key home duals this season as the Terps welcome a hearty Big Ten schedule as well as non-conference duals against regional rivals and a Valentine's Day Beauty and the Beast Dual. We also break down the new hires to the staff as alum Frank Goodwin has come on board and will work with the Terrapin Wrestling Club while Ganbayar Sanjaa comes back to the east coast after a coaching stint at Oklahoma. Sanjaa, a native of Mongolia, was a two-time Division I All-American at American University in Washington, D.C. On Episode 16, we'll talk with Coach McCoy about the busy summer, the upcoming Maryland Wrestling Golf Tournament on August 28 and some of the topics broached at the annual NWCA Convention and their impact on Maryland wrestling. Also a special welcome to the newest member of the Maryland wrestling family as assistant coach Mike Catullo and his wife Brooke welcomed Parker Elizabeth Catullo to the world on July 30.   • UMD15: Incoming heavyweight Youssif Hemida ready for the challenge

    13 JUL 2015 · Episode 15 of the Maryland Mat Chat looks to the future as we talk with one of the standouts from the incoming recruiting class, New York's Youssif Hemida. Hemida become Mamaroneck's first state champion in school history when he captured the 220-pound state championship in 2014. A two-time All-American in freestyle in Fargo, Hemida talks about his ascension up the ranks and why he chose Maryland over Pittsburgh and Minnesota. Hemida, just 17, plans to redshirt and pack on some more pounds to get ready for the size and strength of Division I heavyweights. Standing tall over his opposition is common, but come wrestling season, he'll be the shorter wrestler on the mat when he spars with teammate Dawson Peck. We'll talk with Hemida about his career goals, why Kerry McCoy's influence was a big draw and of course, wrestling in the Big Ten.   • UMD14: Incoming wrestler Josh Ugalde wrestles with a chip on his shoulder

    30 JUN 2015 · Episode 14 of the Maryland Mat Chat looks to the future as we talk with one of the standouts from the incoming recruiting class, New Jersey's Josh Ugalde. Nationally-ranked for most of his final two years in high school at Bound Brook, Ugalde was a three-time state-placewinner in the rugged one-class system in the Garden State. He finished his career with an impressive 140 wins and two runner-up finishes at the state championships. At 170 pounds, Ugalde will likely start his Terp career as a 165-pounder and work with two-time All-American and assistant coach Josh Asper to become battle-ready. Ugalde talks about his plans for Maryland, how he's got a chip on his shoulder heading into Division I wrestling and feels like he's got something to prove.   • UMD13: Kevin Kearns has wrestled, coached and done just about everything in nearly 50 years in and around the University

    29 MAY 2015 · To call Kevin Kearns a "longtime" contributor and coach with Maryland wrestling would be an understatement. Kearns, who started his wrestling career in 1966 with the Terps, is approaching his 40th year on staff in College Park. On Episode 13 of the Maryland Mat Chat, we start with a discussion about Maryland wrestling and its history, but quickly dive into the mind of a great wrestling storyteller. Kearns tells us about his tour of duty in Vietnam, training with the Iron Sheik in Minnesota, meeting Bob Hope and owning a restaurant in Delaware where one of his patrons was future Vice President Joe Biden. The man who worked with five of the seven coaches in Terp wrestling history gives us some straight gold in this episode.     21 APR 2015 · On Episode 11 of the Maryland Mat Chat, head wrestling coach Kerry McCoy talks about his upcoming trip to Santiago, Chile to coach Team USA at the 2015 Pan American Championships. Coach McCoy has traveled the world wrestling, but his opportunities to coach at senior-level team haven't been that frequent. We'll scratch the surface of what the goals are for Team USA and how the Terrapin Wrestling Club factors into those goals. We'll also talk to Coach McCoy about the four wrestlers on the Big Ten All-Academic Team as well as the annual team awards voted on by the team at the annual team banquet earlier this week. Coach McCoy also sets up the spring schedule for the freestyle and Greco-Roman circuit and then talks about coaching Greco with host Jason Bryant. Geoffrey Alexander, Lou Mascola and Spencer Myers all competed at the 2015 NCAA Division I Championships. Mascola went 2-2, knocking off No. 5 Cody Pack of South Dakota State along the way, while Myers picked up the first round's biggest win, a win over No. 3 Bobby Telford of Iowa. Coach McCoy talks about each wrestler's performance, a look towards freestyle and Greco-Roman in the offseason and some happenings with post-season awards and alumni functions.
