  • Randalstown Hoops - The Quiet Assassin - Podcast 16

7 NOV 2016 · Welcome back to another podcast from the Randalstown Hoops were we look back as Celtic restored their 10-point lead at the top of the table after overcoming Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Home manager Brendan Rodgers had changed to three at the back to allow Leigh Griffiths to play alongside Moussa Dembele up front. But Inverness kept them at bay until Scott Sinclair pounced to fire home after the break. Griffiths tapped in before Caley Thistle's Greg Tansey was sent off and Tom Rogic blasted home the third. That second yellow card, which came moments after the second goal, well and truly ended Caley Thistle's hopes of frustrating Celtic for a second time this season. And Celtic, whose only dropped points this season came at Caledonian Stadium, cruised to a sixth straight domestic clean sheet to stretch their lead over Aberdeen, who have also played one game more than the reigning champions. Celtic kept their Champions League hopes alive by battling back to draw with Borussia Monchengladbach. Scott Sinclair curled a shot against the post for the visitors before Lars Stindl volleyed Gladbach ahead. Andre Hahn fired off the crossbar as the hosts pressed for a second and Celtic's Moussa Dembele drew a save from goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Dembele was then fouled by Julian Korb, who was sent off, and the striker converted the resulting penalty. Brendan Rodgers' side, who face Barcelona in Glasgow on 23 November, move on to two points at the bottom of Group C, trailing Gladbach by two points and final group opponents Manchester City by five. We here from an old interview from Lubo Moravcik where he talks about playing in oldco games .However, his arrival in Scotland back in November 1998 may have been greeted with a mixture of scorn and ignorance by the overwhelming majority of the Scottish media, but when he left in June 2002, it was to universal acclaim. Last off all this week we have a 20 min interview from Celtic legend The The Quiet Assassin David Hay who looks back at his time with Celtic and Scotland .

30 OCT 2016 · Welcome back to another weekend podcast from the Randalstown Hoops were we look back at Celtic's 4-0 win over Ross County at the Global Energy Stadium. Brendan Rodgers made wholesale changes to the team which booked their place in the Betfred Cup final against Aberdeen with a 1-0 win over Newco last Sunday. Those players drafted in went out to impress from the start and winger Patrick Roberts scored in the third minute with a fine drive, although County did fashion several chances themselves. Indeed, Staggies defender Andrew Davies hit the post with a header after the break but in the 83rd minute midfielder Stuart Armstrong clinched the points with a fine finish before substitutes Scott Sinclair and Moussa Dembele added further goals in added time. The Hoops extended their unbeaten domestic run to 13 games and go further clear of Aberdeen, whom they visit on Saturday. County, meanwhile, have had gone eight games without a win although boss Jim McIntyre will take some heart from battling performance before the late collapse. Rodgers made eight changes to the side which started against the Light Blues at Hampden. Emilio Izaguirre, Cristian Gamboa, Armstrong, Callum McGregor, Roberts, Ryan Christie, Liam Henderson and Leigh Griffiths all came into the side. Celtic moved nine points clear at the top of the Premiership after beating Aberdeen at Pittodrie. Tom Rogic's controlled half-volley put the reigning champions ahead midway through the first half. Dons goalkeeper Joe Lewis denied Scott Sinclair, Moussa Dembele and Rogic as the visitors pressed for a second after the interval. Having struggled to create, Aberdeen had a late flurry and Craig Gordon prevented an Erik Sviatchenko own goal. Two victories over Celtic at Pittodrie last season had kept the Dons close to Ronny Deila's team until the last few weeks of the season. But Derek McInnes' men drop from second to fourth in a tight table having played a game more than Celtic, who they meet in next month's Scottish League Cup final. We all so hear from brendan rodgers post match interview where he talks to Sky Sports about the game . Our Featured games this week we look back at 3 games from the the past. 1986-05-03: St. Mirren 0-5 Celtic Celtic snatch the championship by edging out Heart of Midlothian on the last day of the campaign. The margin was on goal difference, as Celtic beat St Mirren 5-0 at Love Street and Hearts fall to two late goals from Dundee at Dens Park. 1988-05-14: Celtc 2-1 Dundee Utd, Scottish Cup Final Difficult to begin to understand the atmosphere that surrounded this game. For the Celtic players, it was a chance to seal a memorable double for the club in our Centenary Season having wrapped up the league earlier on. For Dundee Utd, it was a chance to finally break their hoodoo in the Scottish Cup having lost countless number of finals to date (inc the previous cup final in 1987 by St Mirren). Despite being league winners, this was not going to be an easy game for Celtic, and Dundee Utd under the legendary Jim McLean were a very good and entertaining side with some quality players. 1991-03-17: Celtic 2-0 Rangers, Scottish Cup, St Patrick's Day massacre. Cracking win for Celtic after seeing us lose a man first (Peter Grant red card). Huns lost three players and a great morale boosting win saw us KO the huns. First half goals from Gerry Creaney & Shug (deflected free-kick) sealed the win, and no amount of posturing from the Huns could get them near us. Peter Grant made an ass of himself by getting sent off stupidly. He conceded a free-kick outside our box (first yellow) and then charged the free-kick down (second yellow) to get himself a red! Thankfully we survived. Great win as the support sang "Happy Birthday St Patrick" all day long.. Wonderful.

25 OCT 2016 · Welcome back to another podcast from the Randalstown Hoops where we look back as Brendan Rodgers' side had the better of the Hampden match with Scott Sinclair, Tom Rogic, Dembele and Stuart Armstrong drawing saves from Matt Gilks. Erik Sviatchenko had a goal disallowed for Celtic and Sinclair's free-kick was touched on to the bar by Gilks. But there was to be a winner, Dembele's heel converting Leigh Griffiths' cross. Newco, 5-1 losers at Celtic Park last month, were restricted to counter-attacks, the best of which ended with Jason Holt's shot being blocked well by Jozo Simunovic. Celtic will return to Hampden to face the Dons on Sunday 27 November. We all so hear from brendan rodgers post match interview where he talks to Bt Sports about the game. . Our Featured player this week is Henrik Larsson where we look back at his time with Celtic . Henrik Larsson is undeniably one of the most wonderful footballers to have ever graced Scottish football, and is a Celtic legend. Born in Helsingborg, Larsson was the son of a Swedish mother and a father from the the Cape Verde islands, the blend giving him that beloved dirty blonde dreadlocks look. His early years were tough, and he might have ended up following a different path when one of his former teachers warned him about becoming a footballer. On leaving school he ended up in a job as a fruit-packer, and life could have been so more ordinary. Football was his saviour, and from an early age he had thrown himself into the game with his local youth. He moved onto playing for Helsingborg, where he helped the side to promotion and a strong position up the league table. He scored a phenomenal 34 goals in 31 games. His good form led to interest from abroad and a move to Feyenoord should have been a godsend. It turned out to be a frustrating time. Signed originally by future Celtic manager Wim Jansen, after just two months there was a change in management, and Jansen's successor just did not utilise Larsson properly. Playing Larsson in different positions and then substituting him repeatedly after just 60 minutes in games was not helping Larsson's development. This fostered a poor working relationship, and Larsson was being hindered. Having indicated a wish to move on, the situation became farcical when Larsson was left to go to court to force his club to allow him to exit as entitled to by his contracts subject to minimum fees being paid. Not an easy time. The only respite was a wonderful summer with the Swedish national side who reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 1994, with Larsson one of the heroes. Former manager Wim Jansen hadn't forgotten him, and invited him to Celtic. Was it fate? As Larsson was to put it: “It’s hard to say no. You have to say yeah.” Feyenoord's loss was to become Celtic’s gain.

3 OCT 2016 · Welcome back to another podcast from the Randalstown Hoops where we look back as Scott Brown fired a second-half winner against Dundee to stretch Celtic’s lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership in a Tayside tussle at Dens Park. The skipper netted less than two minutes after the restart for his second goal of the season as the Hoops struggled to break down Paul Hartley’s dogged Dark Blues. But the 1-0 victory maintains Celtic’s unbeaten start to the league season under Brendan Rodgers with Motherwell next up at Parkhead after the international break. The Parkhead side returned from the high of their six-goal Champions League thriller against Manchester City and they looked to be suffering from the effects of that game at times. Celtic should have had a penalty when Cammy Kerr - just moments after he was booked - brought down Erik Sviatchenko inside the box but referee Andrew Dallas was having none of it. However, Brown made sure the visitors returned to Glasgow with all three points as he started and finished the move for the only goal of the match early in the second half to leave Dundee still without a home win over Celtic in 28 years. We all so hear from brendan rodgers post match interview where he talks to Bt Sports about the game . Our Featured games this week is from 2012/2013 where we look back at 3 games from the seville run. It wasn't just reaching the final of this tournament that mattered. It was the whole journey. Each time we progressed we were predicted to fail, yet at each hurdle we dug deep into ourselves, both on the pitch and on the terraces, to push our side forward. We made so many friends on the way to the final and the memories will last forever, and the sporting reputation of the club was restored in the eyes of the international footballing community after a long time in the wilderness. The experience was simply a joy and an honour for all fortunate to have been a part of it. Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Celtic,"Men against Boys" it was said after the end of the first leg by arch-Hun Souness. This time though there was no doubt that it was "The Bhoys" who were on top, and Celtic stormed through easily with two cracking goals, first one from Larsson and then a sublime headed goal from Sutton from a corner. We could have won by more!!! Blackburn & Souness left with their tails between their legs! Celtic 3-1 Stuttgart,In the opening minutes Maloney curled a free-kick straight into the hands of Stuttgart goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand from a promising position. Stuttgart then wasted a great chance to take the lead in the ninth minute. Lambert lost possession to Amanatidis just inside his own half and it was two against one for the Germans. But Aliaksandr Hleb's pass was too strong for his team-mate with Neil Lennon and Douglas both struggling to make up the ground. Stuttgart suffered a major blow in 17 minutes, when Bordon was shown a straight red card for a professional foul on Stilian Petrov, who was clean away. But this did not prevent the Bundesliga side from taking the lead in the 27th minute. Balakov swung an inviting cross into the box and Kuranyi rose above Joos Valgaeren to head low past Douglas from 10 yards. This spurred Celtic into action and they began to exert pressure on the Stuttgart defence. Celtic got back on level terms in the 36th minute. Maloney chested AlanThompson's cross into the path of Lambert and he struck a sweet first-time shot past Hildebrand into the bottom corner of the net. Then, with the half-time whistle approaching, Maloney took advantage of a poor clearance by Fernando Meira to bundle the ball under the advancing Stuttgart keeper from close range. Didier Agathe could have stretched their advantage in the 49th minute when space opened up for him, but he sliced his right-foot shot well wide. Celtic were well on top and the Stuttgart goalkeeper saved from Maloney before Meira made a vital block tackle on Agathe. And the pressure told with just over 20 minutes remaining when Petrov somehow squeezed a right-foot shot between Hildebrand and his post from close to the byline after Lambert's pass had sent him clear. Liverpool 0-2 Celtic,After a 1-1 draw at Celtic Park, Celtic knew they needed to come out and attack from the off and they were more than willing to do so. They were soon on the offensive with Thompson intercepting a stray Hamann pass in a dangerous area before shooting over. Henrik Larsson curled a free-kick from 30 yards that Jerzy Dudek acrobatically turned around the post. Larsson's strike partner Hartson was a constant menace for the Liverpool defence and he was just off target with two headers. Steven Gerrard went close with a fine strike from well outside the area that Rab Douglas did well to parry out for a corner. But for much of the opening period Liverpool looked content to sit back and absorb the pressure, knowing a 0-0 draw would be good enough. That was always likely to be a dangerous game against side who went into the tie having scored in their previous 49 outings. It was little surprise when they made it 50 on the stroke of half-time when Thompson scored from a free-kick. Larsson could have added a second when he was one-on-one with the keeper, but Jamie Carragher got back well to deflect his first effort and the Swede's second attempt was wide of the mark. Dudek had to be at his best to tip over as Larsson again threatened from a corner. But he could do little about Hartson's stunning strike that made sure of the win and a place in the semis.

  • Randalstown Hoops - Fortress Parkhead Strikes Again - Podcast 12

29 SEP 2016 · Welcome back to our Midweek podcast where we look back as Celtic and Manchester City played out an entertaining draw last night at Celtic Park in the Group C Champions League game. It was Celtic who took the lead within the first three minutes, when Moussa Dembele tapped home a header, only for Fernandinho to equalise within 8 minutes for the visitors. The hosts went ahead two more times, courtesy of an unfortunate own goal from Raheem Sterling in the 20th minute and an impressive strike by the young Moussa Dembele in the 47th minute. However, City were relentless in attack and found the equaliser within 9 minutes of Celtic going ahead via a Raheem Sterling goal in the 28th minute and a Nolito strike in the 55th minute. It looked like City would add to their goal tally only for Celtic to put in a brave performance towards the end of the game to ensure that points were split between the two teams.Manchester City has been in imperious form since the start of the season, asserting their dominance on games with their superstar players working in tandem, and they were expected to add to their 10 match winning streak at Celtic. However, what followed was an exhilarating 90 minutes which left Pep Guardiola’s side hurting at the end of it. Although Guardiola’s men came back to find an equaliser on three occasions in the game, the draw against the Scottish opponents serves as a reminder that even the best of the teams can find it tough on the road in Europe. The noisy Celtic Park was rather underestimated in its grandeur as well as its ferocity and served as a 12th man for the home team, egging them on to secure a decisive result in the recent history of the club. Celtic were written off as no-hopers and a squad that cost £20million to assemble versus a pool of players that were brought together at an jaw-dropping £420m. A squad that just two weeks before had been annihilated 7-0 by Barcelona. But that was in Spain. This was in Glasgow. And the critics were left to choke on their words as Celtic played with an intensity and fire that could have burned your retinas. The 3-3 draw with Manchester City, coupled with Barcelona’s win at Borussia Moenchengladbach has hauled Scotland’s champions right back into the Group C reckoning, or at least a chance of a place in the Europa League. We all so hear from brendan rodgers post match interview where he talks to Bt Sports about the game . We look back as Chris Sutton and Derek Johnstone were involved in an epic spat live on radio on Friday evening, with the former Celtic striker really going for the jugular. Sutton was speaking live on Clyde 1’s Super Scoreboard programme, primarily to promote an event he’ll be attending in Glasgow next week, when he decided to take issue with Johnstone, calling him a “Rangers puppet”. In recent weeks, Sutton has said he thinks the Rangers job is too big for manager Mark Warburton, something Johnstone told him was “utter nonsense”. But that didn’t stop Sutton from putting his point across as you can hear in the clip above, going on to label Johnstone a “spineless man”, “a charlatan”, and a “party political broadcaster”. It was clear to anyone listening that Johnstone was absolutely furious, and he replied by saying: “I’m absolutely disgusted with myself that I’m even talking to you tonight.” Last Weekend Celtic beat Kilmarnock 6-1 . Celtic smashed Kilmarnock for six - despite going behind to a shock opener after Souleyman Coulibaly’s 40-yard stunner caught out Dorus de Vries. Moussa Dembele lashed a quick-fire double, James Forrest, Tom Rogic and Leigh Griffiths netted while Scott Sinclair - who has now scored in his first six league games for the Hoops - is closing in on Jimmy McGrory’s 80-year record of scoring in his first eight league games in a row. But Brendan Rodgers’s men had to recover from an early setback when Coulibaly lashed the ball over de Vries to give the Rugby Park men a shock lead. Our Featured game this week is from 2012 where we look back as celtic beat Barcelona 2-1 at Parkhead . It was a momentous victory for manager Neil Lennon, who was part of the team that knocked Barca out of the Uefa Cup in 2004, and his men - banishing memories of the injury-time defeat in Barcelona two weeks before.

18 SEP 2016 · Welcome back to our weekend podcast where look back as Celtic drew 2-2 with Inverness Caledonian Thistle . Inverness snatched a last-gasp equaliser to end Celtic's 100 per cent start to the Scottish Premiership season. Alex Fisher's 88th-minute header snatched a point for the hosts in the Highlands as he turned in Greg Tansey's pinpoint cross. Despite the lateness of the goal, there were still to chances to win it for either side, with Tansey curling a 22-yard free-kick just wide of the post before Owain Fon William saved from Moussa Dembele deep into stoppage time.Celtic took the lead through Tom Rogic's fifth goal of the season after 17 minutes, turning home a simple tap-in at the back post from Kieran Tierney's cross. Caley were level 10 mintes later when Billy King turned inside Cristian Gamboa before firing into the top corner from just outside the penalty area. The Hoops' response was immediate, however, as Scott Sinclair preserved his record of having scored in each of Celtic's league games so far this season. His sixth goal of the season came when he expertly curled past Fon Williams in to the top corner. That's how it stayed until Fisher's late leveller, a result which sees Celtic stay top, three points ahead of Hearts and St Johnstone, while Caley move off the bottom at the expense of Partick Thistle. We all so hear from brendan rodgers post match interview where he talks to sky tv . We look back as Lionel Messi scored his sixth Champions League hat-trick as rampant Barcelona inflicted on Celtic their heaviest ever European defeat. The Argentina forward cracked in an early first goal in the Group C match. Celtic's Moussa Dembele had a penalty saved before Messi poked in his second. In the second half, Neymar's free-kick sailed into the net, Andres Iniesta volleyed a fourth, Messi slid home the fifth and Luis Suarez scored with a volley and then a side-footed finish.
