In 1627, the Barbary corsairs, notorious pirates from North Africa, launched a devastating raid on Iceland. Led by Dutchman Murat Reis, the corsairs raided the coastal settlements of Iceland, plundering villages, capturing inhabitants, and pillaging valuable goods. The raid resulted in the capture and enslavement of around 400 Icelandic residents, causing widespread fear and devastation. Many of the captives were sold into slavery in North Africa, marking a dark chapter in Iceland's history. This event highlighted the vulnerability of isolated communities to piracy and underscored the dangers posed by corsairs in the North Atlantic during the 17th century.
