Angela Oakley knows the meaning of adversity having experienced a life time of challenges with her left leg. A practicing veterinarian in Grand Prairie, Alberta some 9 hours north of Calgary, she has had to adapt from being a large animal—mostly equine—practitioners to becoming a small animal vet. Over the course of her career she has gone from being a mid calf amputee to a mid femur amputee. Angela has had so many surgical procedures she has almost lost count, it’s well north of 20 by now. Being born with her foot turned out was the beginning of her medical journey from being a Nordic skier and swimmer, she has learned to adapt her sporting career. Often seen at Spruce Meadows and Thunderbird, the former show jumper is now adapting to dressage but has not lost sight of her main passion to jump again. And with a prosthetic leg that can be preset to angles of the knee, she is hopeful of reaching her new goal.
