Prof. Sean Newcomer of California State University in San Marcos is driven by the question of how to use scientific research to make surfing equipment better. Currently his main focus along with Prof. Jeff Nessler, has become how wetsuits can be improved. Recently Sean was quoted in Outside Magazine, “What the surf industry is marketing is not driven by science,” So the question has to be asked: Are we being fed bogus surf marketing? Sean is our guest for this episode. We discuss that question and dive into the science and testing of his research, the methodologies he uses and how our wetsuits could be improved. We get into his roundabout journey to becoming one of the foremost experts on investigating the impact of surf equipment on paddling efficiency, thermoregulation, and body mechanics. If you are a surf nerd when it comes to your surf gear, this a not to be missed episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast.
