A brand or a business's success is in its customers. The way we serve them, the product we offer, and how we interact with the customers are part of the good service that will lead these customers to religiously buy our products and services.

Dr. James Richardson will join us in today's episode. He is an expert in the field, and he will share his advice and ideas to make our business grow based on listening to our clients, which in his opinion, will turn your few dollars business into a billion dollars one.


ABOUT DR. JAMES RICHARDSON

He began his career as a cultural anthropologist specializing in South Asia, which he looks at as his personal boot camp.

His academic expertise is in shared symbolism and how people use it publicly to create specific social impressions. As a result, he learned never to take anything people say at face value.

After he jumped off the tenure track in 2002 at very high speed, he entered the world of corporate market research at a boutique firm specializing in emerging health and wellness trends. His first client was Whole Foods Market. He spent hours in their stores all over the United States, studying shopping behavior, but more importantly, learning how ordinary people became core Whole Foods Market shoppers.

Starting in 2011, he and his team focused hard on deconstructing the patterns behind the premium consumer packaged goods (CPG) that had beaten the odds and scaled to nine figures and beyond. 

In 2017. He left his executive position to enter the private markets and help fast-growing premium CPG brands directly.

[0:57] Getting to know Dr. James Richardson.
He works with entrepreneurs in the consumer packaged goods industry, helps founders create strategic plans to achieve exponential growth, and advise founders on implementing, evaluating, and revising those plans.

[1:49] Dr. James Richardson entrepreneurship journey.
Since college Dr. Richardson has been interested in human behavior, leading him to study anthropology in 1990 and getting a degree in 2002. He found his passion by helps founders create strategic plans based on listening and having a good relationship with customers.

[9:12] Overpriced products and “Magical Thinking”.
Some brands sell overpriced and bad quality products due to three factors: Culture, values, and magical thinking. Dr. Richardson will explain the magical thinking system that leads customers to keep buying overpriced and bad quality products.

[14:07] Knowing your customers.
Knowing your customers' and creating a market strategy is the key to have a successful business.

[18:31] The biggest entrepreneurs mistakes.
The big problem is not listening to customers. As Dr. Richardson said, “Entrepreneurs start their business for a reason a,b,c, and the customers buy it for reason d,e,f, and you will never know the reason why if you don’t listen to them.

[21:26] The importance of a marketing strategy.
Having a marketing strategy will help you to get your business known, to sell, and with a lot of work being successful. Dr. Richardson will share with us the story of how a 3$ company ended up worth 9 billion dollars.

[23:32] You are not the client.
Stop projecting your thoughts on the clients. I asked Dr. Richardson why he thinks most of the market strategies are so lame, and his answer was: “They project their thoughts on the client”.

[28:27] The move during this pandemic.
Invest in keeping the clients you already have. Finding new clients during the global crisis is one of the hardest things to do. If we invest our time in keeping our customers, we will keep our income too.
