One of the very last Band of Brothers heroes explains the crucial role of American women in the Second World War. As an operations sergeant, later given an unusual battlefield commission, this highly decorated soldier had detailed knowledge of the tremendous contribution to the war effort women made overseas, not just ‘manning’ the factories back home. There were women as code breakers, spies, logistics experts, interpreters, telephone operators, supply coordinators, and countless other sometimes surprisingly important positions. Behind the lines in Normandy, Holland, and the Battle of the Bulge, Col. Shames saw firsthand that the chauvinistic Germans who employed no women soldiers were thereby at a distinct disadvantage in the long grueling conflict.
