Tirumangai Azhvar begins his Peria Tirumozhi by talking of how he was sorrowful in the early years of his life. But he says he discovered the name of Lord Narayana and was thus saved. The very name of the Lord can liberate us by destroying our burden of sins, said Gomatam Madhavachariar in a discourse.

Over many births we accumulate sins, which are collectively known as Sanchita Karma. Of this, a small portion called Prarabdha Karma causes our present birth and what we experience in it. Every time we take birth, we sin knowingly or unknowingly. And this then gets added to the bundle of Sanchita Karma. Thus we get caught in a never-ending cycle of births and deaths. But just one name uttered by us — the name of Lord Narayana — will destroy our sins like cotton cast into fire. Tirumangai Azhvar says that after he discovered the power of the Lord’s name, he has been blessed with wealth. The wealth he is talking about here is the Lord Himself for, the Lord saves those who utter His name. Our future karma is called Aagaami karma. Karma thus falls into three categories — Sanchita, Prarabdha and Aagaami. In the Ramayana, Rama and Lakshmana guard Viswamitra’s Vedic ritual. The demons Mareecha and Subahu try to defile the ritual. Rama kills Subahu right away, but kicks Mareecha away. Later Mareecha takes the form of the golden deer and is killed by Rama. Subahu symbolically represents Sanchita Karma and Mareecha represents Aagaami karma. Thus both Sanchita and Aagaami karma are got rid of by the Lord. We have to face the effects of Prarabdha Karma. But if we have surrendered to Him, we will attain moksha at the end of this life.
