In the battle for Hong Kong... Apple has sided with China
It’s a big claim from a Democratic senator in the US all because Apple has banned an app called “HKmap.Live” It will show you where law enforcement are and what direction they’re heading. It’s similar to the traffic app Waze that allows the driving community to let fellow drivers know about where speed cameras are, or accidents. Apple says this is different though, because it’s being used to “endanger law enforcement and residents in Hong Kong”.. which is a violation of its rules. The app makers say its never solicited, promoted or encouraged any criminal activity - it merely pulls in publicly available information into a map.
Your smart TV is watching what you’re watching
Your Amazon Fire TV, your Apple TV, Roku - they know exactly what’s on your screen. Some of it is expected, the device name, your IP address, what city and state you might be in, but some of the devices and apps are also sending your device’s serial number and the name of your WiFi network, which can be used to identify a particular individual. Some of the apps in the study were even sending your email address and the video titles of what you’re watching unencrypted. Of course there’s no oversight over how that data is processed and who its sold to. These days, if it’s connected to the internet, it’s probably sending data back about you.
Microsoft’s new keyboard has two new buttons
Their new keyboards which go on sale next month will have a dedicated button to launch an emoji picker. Emojis are creeping their way into more and more communications, including at the office, so Microsoft wants to make it easier to access them. They’re also adding an Office button, which will replace one of the Windows buttons. You’ll be able to use it to launch Word, Excel and Outlook quickly, just like you would use the windows key to do shortcuts.
