The Most High God’s word in the scriptures is clear about the principles of temperance. In the book of Proverbs, God commands us to be “temperate in all things” (Prov. 23:2). This means that we should practice moderation and self-control in all areas of our lives, including our physical, mental, and emotional health. The Bible also encourages us to practice moderation in our eating and drinking habits, warning us to “not be among winebibbers” (Prov. 23:20). This means that we should not overindulge in food or drink, as this can lead to physical and spiritual harm.
In addition to physical temperance, the Bible also encourages us to practice spiritual temperance. We should strive to be “temperate in spirit” (Prov. 14:29) and to “walk in wisdom” (Col. 4:5). This means that we should be mindful of our spiritual health, avoiding worldly temptations and focusing on our relationship with God. The Bible also encourages us to practice self-control in our speech, telling us to “let your speech always be with grace” (Col. 4:6). By practicing temperance in all areas of our lives, we can be sure that we are honoring God and living in accordance with His will.
