When Donald J. Trump was elected 45th president of the United States there was a quiet optimism that the strained relations between Moscow and Washington might begin to improve. However, in recent days the United States congress has voted to increase sanctions against Russian corporations, despite a reluctance from their European allies to do the same. In a swift response, Vladimir Putin announced that 750 US diplomats and staff would be expelled from Moscow immediately. It appears that the hopes for a diplomatic reset are over.
