Work-life balance is an important topic of conversation. Its popularity is driven in part by the negative effects associated with the lack of work-life balance. Those may include health issues, decreased productivity at work, decreased work engagement, and burnout. The perception of work-life balance may be influenced by many distinct variables including individual traits, context, and occupation. Technology, the absence of relevant labor laws and regulations, and deficient organizational policies contribute to the frequency of lacking work-life balance. The key to properly addressing such imbalance between work and non-work domains lays in not only recognition of the problem, but also in proactive efforts to shift the balance. While the employee is instrumental in establishing, maintaining, or correcting work-life balance, the employer’s role is equally important.
